ISOS4I
To ensure sustainable and competitive space activities, the European Union aims to develop the strategic capability to "Act in Space" – the ability to autonomously perform in-space operations and services (ISOS), including servicing, assembly, manufacturing, debris removal and logistics. These capabilities will enhance the sustainability, safety, resilience and competitiveness of Europe's space infrastructure.
To realise this vision, the European Commission has launched the ISOS Pilot Mission, an adaptive and scalable mission concept comprising four complementary components: Servicing, HOST, Logistic, and satAPPs. Starting with the demonstration of key technologies and initial services, the mission will progressively enable operational demonstrations, stimulate innovative business models and support commercial and governmental applications aligned with EU strategic priorities.
The mission is planned to be demonstrated by 2030, building on previous R&I investments by the European Commission, ESA and the Member States.
Mission components
SERVICING
Autonomous spacecraft providing robotic in-orbit services to client satellites. Projects: EROSS SC
and SCOPE.
HOST
HOST stands for “Hub for Operational Services and Testing”. This is an orbital platform supporting servicing and logistics spacecraft, storing and assembling satAPPs, and hosting in-orbit demonstration (IOD) and validation (IOV) experiments. Project: EPRIME.
LOGISTIC
Spacecraft transporting cargo, propellant, supplies and satAPPs to the HOST. Project: ASTRALIS.
satAPPs
A modular ecosystem of plug-and-play functional modules enabling satellite upgrades, payload exchange and IOD/IOV experiments. Projects: smartCASE and JANUS.
